What are Normal Testosterone Levels?

Types of Testosterone in the Body

Testosterone in the Body. Testosterone exists in your body in 3 forms - SHBG bound testosterone, Albumin bound, and Free testosterone. The majority of bound testosterone in the body is chemically bound to a protein called SHBG or sex hormone binding globulin. The remaining bound testosterone in the bloodstream is mostly bound to albumin, another protein. Free testosterone is not chemically attached to any proteins and is considered the bio-active form of testosterone as it is readily available to bind to androgen receptor sites on cells.

Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) or sex steroid-binding globulin (SSBG) is a glycoprotein that binds to the two sex hormones: androgen and estrogen.

Bio-Available Testosterone

Since Albumin bound testosterone can eventually break free from its protein, it can eventually become available for use by the body. Together with Free testosterone, Albumin bound testosterone comprises Bio-Available Testosterone.

Testosterone Blood Serum Measurements. A blood serum testosterone test measures the total of Bound, Bioavailable and Free Testosterone in the body. What is considered a normal testosterone level of combined Bound Testosterone and Free Testosterone in a man's body can range anywhere from 300-1200 ng/dl (nanograms per deciliter). Levels of androgen circulating in the bloodstream vary by a person's size, weight, age and health. Cypionate Testosterone

Cypionate: This ester has a half-life of 8 to 10 days resulting in steady metabolism of the steroid testosteroone hormone once injected. Enanthate: This esterized testosterone is metabolized by the body over 3 to 5 days and can remain in the body for up to 2 weeks after injection. 100mg of Testosterone Enanthate yields about 75mg of actual testosterone, the remaining 25mg is ester solution. Injections are administered every 3 to 5 days. Starting enanthate doses raise a patient's testosterone levels to within optimal ranges of 600ng/dL to 1100ng/dL using 100mg-250mg IM Enanthate every 3 to 5 days.

Propionate Testosterone

Propionate: This is a faster acting ester which can peak in the blood within hours and be fully metabolized over 2 to 3 days. Propionate Injections such as Testoviron® are commonly administered every other day, or every 2 days. Since propionate steroid injections metabolizes so rapidly, it needs to be administered frequently. Frequent administration ensures stable androgen blood levels and optimizes testosterone levels very quickly. 100mg of Testosterone Propionate yields a bout 90mg of testosterone with the remaining 10mg being ester solution.

Undecanoate Testosterone

Undecanoate: This ester has a half-life of over 10 days resulting in the steady metabolism of steroid testosterone hormone once injected. Providers commonly recommend injecting Undecanoate such as Aveed® once in a large dose of 750mg and then again after a month. Thereafter an undecanoate injections is made every 3 months or so to maintain stable androgen hormone levels.

Suspension Testosterone

Aqueous Testosterone Suspension:Has no Ester and requires frequent or daily IM injections since it remains in the body only for a few hours. This esterized testosterone is not usually prescribed for TRT.
